Where to Stay Near Edinburgh: Why the Scottish Borders Is the Answer

Victoria street in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of Europe's most captivating cities. The Castle, the Royal Mile, the whisky bars, the world-class museums, Harry Potter would lave been in awe with the place Hogwarts is modelled after. But here is something we tell all our guests: you do not have to stay in Edinburgh to enjoy Edinburgh.

Here at Bowden House, nestled in the peaceful village of Bowden just three miles from Melrose, we offer something Edinburgh simply cannot - countryside, calm, a genuinely personal welcome and a full breakfast that sets you up properly for the day. And with Edinburgh just 55 minutes away by train, the city is always there when you want it.

The Scottish Borders: Edinburgh's Best-Kept Secret

A misty view of the scottish borders at sunrise

The Borders Railway connects Tweedbank - a short drive from Bowden House - with Edinburgh Waverley, right in the heart of the city. Services run every 30 minutes at peak times and the journey takes around 55 minutes, through open farmland and the gentle valleys of the Borders.

What this means in practice is that Edinburgh becomes a day trip from your countryside retreat, rather than an expensive city-centre hotel that comes with noisy nights and closed small rooms. The difference in how you feel at the end of each day is remarkable, because a room with a view, a balcony with a hamock, a breakfast of champions and the lull of a nearby stream is sure to provide a tranquil stay far beyond anything you can dream of.

What You Get at Bowden House That Edinburgh Cannot Offer

  • Free private parking in our secure gated courtyard - no hunting for spaces, no parking charges

  • A full breakfast of your choice, cooked freshly each morning and included in the room rate

  • Three luxury bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and breathtaking views over the Borders countryside

  • A maximum of six guests at any one time - real peace, real privacy, a genuinely personal stay

  • A log burner in our shared lounge, a terrace with seating, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system

  • Hosts who live here, love the area and can point you to the best local restaurants, walks and hidden spots

  • A dedicated boot room and drying facilities - perfect after a day in Edinburgh or on the hills

It is the difference between a hotel room and actually staying somewhere that feels like home.

Coming home

The train brings you back to Tweedbank and the Borders countryside in the evening. A different world from the city you have just left. Breakfast is ready for you in the morning whenever you want it.

Staying Near Edinburgh is the Smart Choice

  • August Festival season - when Edinburgh hotels charge extraordinary rates, the Borders is 55 minutes away and gloriously peaceful

What Else Is Right on Our Doorstep?

Melrose Abbey is three miles away. The Eildon Hills are a mere jump and a skip across the road, starting right behind our garden. Abbotsford House, Sir Walter Scott's home, is a short drive. The River Tweed runs through the valley below us. Quite often our guests arrive planning to spend most of their time in Edinburgh and end up enamoured with our countryside and secret nooks, leaving them unexpectedly spending time largely in the Borders. We take that as a compliment.
