From Bowden House, the Scottish capital is just 55 minutes by train -- a direct service from Tweedbank station, a short drive from our door, straight into the heart of the city at Edinburgh Waverley.

Staying with us in the Scottish Borders and dipping into Edinburgh for the day might just be the best way to experience both worlds at once. Rolling countryside, proper peace and quiet, a hearty breakfast, and free parking on our end, then one of the most beautiful cities on earth at the other. Here's everything you need to make the most of it.

Getting to Edinburgh from Bowden House

The Borders Railway runs from Tweedbank to Edinburgh Waverley in around 55 minutes, with trains gliding by every 30 minutes or so, no need to rush, another one's always close behind. The scenery does a lot of the entertaining for you: rolling Borders farmland unspools past the window, dotted with small hamlets and hedgerows, before gently giving way to the rooftops and spires of the capital. Leave your car safely tucked away in our private gated courtyard and travel into Edinburgh without a single thought for city centre parking.

A Day in Edinburgh: Where to Go

Edinburgh Castle

Start at the top, quite literally. Edinburgh Castle perches on its ancient volcanic rock high above the city, and it's every bit the icon of Scotland it's cracked up to be. Give yourself two to three hours to do it justice, the Crown Jewels, the Great Hall, and those views from the battlements have a habit of stealing far more time than you plan for. And as ever, book tickets ahead if you're visiting in summer, the queues have a way of testing even the most patient sightseer.

The Royal Mile

The Royal Mile runs the whole stretch from the Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and it doesn't waste a single inch, there's something worth stopping for at every turn. Camera Obscura, the Museum of Childhood, St Giles' Cathedral, they all line this storied stretch of cobbles. And keep an eye out for the closes: duck down one of these narrow little side-passages and you'll stumble into hidden courtyards holding centuries of history, tucked away just off the main thoroughfare.

The National Museum of Scotland

Free to enter, world class in quality, and a couple of steps away from the Royal Mile. The National Museum covers Scottish history, science, design, fashion and natural history. Most importantly you will meet the first cloned sheep in the world, Dolly the Sheep, ready to strike a pose for a photo sure to wow the family at home. It is an excellent all-weather option and a morning or afternoon very well spent.

Arthur's Seat

For those who like a walk with their sightseeing, Arthur's Seat is the ancient volcano at the edge of Holyrood Park. Many skip this iconic trek, but there is no place better to watch the sun go down than on this little Hill overlooking the ancient city. Making the Most of Your Edinburgh Day

A full day in Edinburgh from Bowden House is entirely possible and genuinely satisfying. Leave after breakfast, catch an early train, and you have the best part of 8 to 10 hours in the city before the evening train brings you back to the Borders. We suggest:

• Morning: Edinburgh Castle, then a wander down the Royal Mile

• Lunchtime: somewhere on or just off the Royal Mile -- no shortage of good options

• Afternoon: the National Museum of Scotland, or Arthur's Seat if the weather is good

• Late afternoon: a whisky, then back to Waverley for the train home

You will come back to Bowden House tired in the best possible way, with dinner in Melrose if you want it, or a quiet evening in our lounge with the log burner going.

We say this gently, but we say it with experience: most guests who come planning one Edinburgh day end up wishing they had booked two nights. There is genuinely too much to see in a single day, and the train makes it easy to spread it across your stay.
