55 Minutes from the Fringe: The Borders Railway

Next, you're whisked away on a short train ride through the pristine Scottish Borders, a feast for the eyes and the soul, before arriving right in the centre of the action: Princes Street, Edinburgh.

The Borders Railway glides directly from Tweedbank to Edinburgh Waverley in around 55 minutes, past rolling hills and glinting rivers that seem to wave you on your way. Tweedbank is just 10 minutes from Bowden House by car. Edinburgh Waverley station drops you straight onto Princes Street, a short stroll from the Royal Mile and virtually every major Fringe venue.

Trains run throughout the day until about midnight, so there's no need to rush the magic. Just check the ScotRail timetable before booking any late-night shows, and plan your last train home accordingly. And if the evening runs away with you, a taxi from Tweedbank back to Bowden House is a short and easy journey home.

What Edinburgh Festival Accommodation Usually Costs

In August, Edinburgh hotel prices frequently reach three or four times their usual rates. Central properties that cost 100 to 150 pounds on a normal night regularly exceed 300 to 400 pounds during Festival season. Availability for Edinburgh Fringe accommodation disappears months in advance.

Getting to Edinburgh

Drive or take a taxi to Tweedbank station (free parking). The train is a lovely 55-minute journey through the Borders countryside. Edinburgh Waverley is right in the heart of the city.

Your festival day

Shows, exhibitions, free events on the Royal Mile, the Book Festival in Charlotte Square, the Military Tattoo on the Castle Esplanade -- the Fringe and its surrounding events offer something for every taste and almost every budget. Many of the best Fringe shows cost under 15 Pounds and an abundance of street artists vow for your attention.

The evening return

The train brings you back through the Borders countryside. Dinner in Melrose if you want it -- several good options within easy reach. You will return to Edinburgh the next morning all the better for it- rested and ready for more.

Bowden House has three luxury bedrooms. That means we host a maximum of six guests at any one time, which is part of what makes staying here so personal and so peaceful. It also means we fill up fast in August as demand for accommodation across central Scotland is extraordinary during Festival season. Even though we are a wee bit more hidden than most, If you are planning a Festival trip, book your Borders accommodation several months in advance.
