The 4 Borders' Abbey Way

Take in the ruined abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh on this beautiful circular route spanning 107 kilometres. A favourite among ramblers looking for walking holidays in Scotland, the 4 Borders’ Abbey Way has it all: long stretches beside the Rivers Tweed and Teviot, rugged hills, wildlife-spotting opportunities and, of course, the ancient Abbeys and castles that make the Scottish Borders so rich in history, including Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott.

The Borders Abbeys Way unfolds over five stages between historic towns. Traverse the ancient pathways from Jedburgh near the English border to the historic mill towns of Hawick and Selkirk, and bask in the picturesque beauty of Melrose and Kelso, where impressive Georgian buildings grace the cobbled market square.

Stage Descriptions:

- Jedburgh to Hawick: 20.75km, 5 - 6 hours

- Hawick to Selkirk: 19.75km, 5 - 6 hours

- Selkirk to Melrose: 16.75km, 4 - 5 hours

- Melrose to Kelso: 28.5km, 6.5 - 8 hours

- Kelso to Jedburgh: 21km, 5 - 6 hours

Discover the Three Brethren

If you're seeking a shorter but equally rewarding adventure, look no further than the delightful circular walk starting from Selkirk. Discover the Three Brethren - three imposing cairns dating back to the sixteenth century - which provide an excellent viewpoint over the rolling Borders hills. Take in the unique peaks of the Eildon Hills - a huge draw for tourists and ramblers alike - and pass through Selkirk town on your return to Bowden House.

Local Walks from Bowden House B&B

There are plenty of local walks from Bowden and Melrose, such as the 15-kilometre looped trail that takes you past Abbotsford, Sir Walter Scott’s famous home. The route leads you through newly planted woodland and farmland, ascending to the tranquil Cauldshiels Loch before descending to the serene River Tweed. Follow the river's path back to Melrose, all while passing Abbotsford, the illustrious home of Sir Walter Scott.

For an even gentler ramble, the grounds of the Abbotsford Estate, developed by Sir Walter Scott, offers a variety of woodland and river side walks.
